You should definitely consult with more than 2 surgeons to get a clear idea of your options. No two doctors are alike and each one has a different style and technique. There are many doctors that will explant even if they don’t believe in BII. However, you may find yourself being more comfortable with a surgeon that believes in BII. You want to make sure that the surgeon is capable of full removal of the capsules using en bloc or total capsulectomy. This way it ensures the best outcome and recovery for your health. Make sure you are fully prepared with questions and do enough research so that you know what to ask and to understand the surgeon’s responses. Most Facebook support groups have documentation on their pages in their files that you can use to further your knowledge.

When doing your online research about surgeons you want to make sure they are  board certified plastic surgeons with microsurgery training and have one numerous explant surgeries.  For example, a surgeon that has only done 50 explants is not somebody I would trust cutting my body open. This is definitely too little experience. You want to also want to ask them how long they have been a surgeon. Does he/she work with a hospital or does he/she have his own center? Has he/she ever had those hospital privileges removed? Is his/her anesthesiologist also board certified? For a list of questions to ask a surgeon click here. It is important that you make sure your surgeon does a full capsule removal, takes pictures of your implants and capsules, sends implants to pathology, and returns your implants back to you.
